St. Xavier Wins Eighth Consecutive State Title, Ursula girls third

CANTON — St. Xavier High School won the 2016 OHSAA Division I Boys State Swimming and Diving Tournament Saturday, Feb. 27, as the Bombers scored a state meet-record 398 points en route to winning their eighth-consecutive and 37th overall state championship.

St. Xavier took the lead from the start as the team of sophomore Justin Grender, junior Luke Sobolewski, junior Charles Leibson and sophomore Nicholas Perera won the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:30.40, breaking the previous state meet record of 1:31.67 set in 2011.

St. Xavier junior Grant House won the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:36.93. From that point on, there was no looking back for the Bombers, who went on to win three more events including another record-setting performance in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Sobolewski won the 100 Yard Butterfly, recording a time 48.57. House followed up with an individual victory of his own, winning the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:24.61.

The Bombers ended on a strong note in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay as the team of Grender, Leibson, House and senior Matt Slabe swam a state meet record time of 3:01.34.

Columbus St. Charles finished in second place with 154 total points, while Upper Arlington claimed third place with 138.

Archbishop Moeller finished sixth.

 

St. Ursula Academy academy finishes third at State swim meet

CANTON — It came down to the last event as Upper Arlington came back from an early deficit to win the 2016 OHSAA Girls Division I Swimming and Diving State Tournament Saturday at C.T. Branin Natatorium. It was a back-and-forth affair as Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy, Mason and Upper Arlington shared the first-place position throughout the evening.

St. Ursula stood in first-place over Mason and Upper Arlington, though the latter began to gain ground by the middle of the evening. After the 500 Yard Freestyle, Mason stood atop with a 19-point lead over Upper Arlington. In the very next event, the Upper Arlington team of Sheehan, Trace, junior Anna Linzell and sophomore Dakota Elliott won the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:34.07 to close the gap on Mason, which placed second in the relay.

Mason finished in second place with 229 points while Cincinnati St. Ursula Academy finished third with 203.5.

Ursuline Academy finished eighth.

 

Alter senior wins diving title for third year in row

Kettering Archbishop Alter senior Claire Schuermann won the girls Division II diving competition for the third straight time with a score of 478.35.

Summit Country Day’s Emma Hellman finished 12th.
