Lou Holtz, the storied football coach known for leading the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 12-0 perfect season including a national championship win in 1989, has entered hospice care, according to media reports.

Sports writer Kyle Sutherland wrote on Jan. 29 that he confirmed Holtz’s entrance into hospice. Multiple other news outlets subsequently confirmed the development.

It was not immediately clear from what ailment Holtz was suffering. The former coach is 89 years old and has been retired for more than two decades.

A Catholic, he had four children with his wife, Beth Barcus, who passed away in 2020 after they had been married for 59 years. One of his sons is Skip Holtz, who has served as the head coach of multiple collegiate football teams.
