ARCHDIOCESE — The annual Blue Mass, celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains Sept. 11, was an opportunity to recognize local safety personnel, along with honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr was the primary celebrant.

The event began with a blessing ceremony for attending members of police and fire departments and on the equipment they use to carry out their duties. Following the blessing, officers, their relatives and members of the community processed into the cathedral behind a bagpiper and color guard. At the end of the Mass, names of safety personnel who have died in the past year were read.

Later in the day, Archbishop Schnurr took part in a 9/11 observance with other religious and community leaders at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
