Archdiocese will welcome at least 1,096 people into full communion this Easter
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati will welcome at least 1,096 people into full communion with the Church this Easter, the highest number in more than 15 years.
The archdiocese’s Divine Worship and Sacraments Office reports that the Church will receive 556 catechumens, people who have not been baptized, and 540 candidates, baptized people who will be confirmed into the Catholic Church.
This year’s total is part of a growing trend and marks the largest group since 2009 when 1,125 people came into full communion with the Church at Easter.
On Sunday, February 22 the candidates and catechumens gathered at three locations around the archdiocese for the Rite of Election of Catechumens and Calling of the Candidates to Continuing Conversion. In Cincinnati, hundreds gathered with Fr. Steve Angi for the liturgy at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains. The liturgy includes an affirmation of intention to enter the Church by the catechumens and final preparation steps before entering the Church at Easter.
In addition, the Rite of Election was also held at Church of the Immaculate Conception in Dayton with Archbishop Robert G. Casey, as well as at St. Susanna Church in Mason. At St. Susanna Church the Rite of Election was held for Hispanic candidates and catechumens. There were 96 catechumens and candidates at the Hispanic liturgy.
In advance of the February 22 liturgy, Archbishop Casey released a letter to the catechumens and candidates. He said, in part, “As our Lenten retreat begins along with your final days of preparation, I encourage you to make this a time of true prayer and conversion. Be evermore open to the Spirit of God working in your life. Strive to radiate the love of Jesus Christ in all that you say and do.”
