Sr. Marietta (Roslee) Fritz, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, born in Cincinnati, OH , died peacefully on August 12, 2023 at the age of 81 years, in the 60th year of her religious life.

Roslee Fritz was born in 1942 into a very devout Catholic family, the third of seven children to Carrie and Edwin Fritz. Shortly before she was born, her parents moved from their southern Indiana farm to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Roslee attended Notre Dame schools from grades 1 through 12, and was blest that even her subsequent degrees were from Catholic colleges. Her Catholic schooling fertilized the seeds planted in her at home. In 1960, she entered with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and was given the name Sr. Marietta.

Sr. Marietta taught high school math and physics for 18 years, in Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, always visiting a jail or prison wherever she was. In 1984, she became the full time Catholic jail Chaplain at the Saginaw County Jail in Saginaw, Michigan.  While working at the jail, she, with Sister Shirley Orand, started Emmaus House. Emmaus House was a home for women coming out of jail/prison/rehab.  (A book was written about her: Sister Marietta, Saginaw’s Saint by Joan & Craig Douglas that tells the story and contributes to the ongoing ministry of Emmaus House.)

Then, in 2016, Sr. Marietta returned to Cincinnati, where she was still able to be with her women at the Hamilton County Jail, and as a volunteer at Venice on Vine, a job training/pizza shop. In 2023, Marietta moved to the Mount Notre Dame Health Center, in Reading, Ohio, where, on August 12, she completed her journey home to God.  Sr. Marietta was 81 years old and in her 63rd year of religious life.  She will be deeply missed by her community of sisters; her sisters, nieces, and nephews; and the many men and women with whom she ministered.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Mount Notre Dame Healthcare Center, 699 East Columbia Avenue, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of Notre Dame, 701 E. Columbia Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45215. Funeral arrangements: Geo. H. Rohde & Son Funeral Home, 3183 Linwood Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45208, Phone: 513-321-0404 www.rohdefuneral.com
