Obituary: Sister Monica McGloin, OP

Sister Monica McGloin, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope died in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 2, 2019 at the age of 78. The daughter of the late John and Theresa (Torpey) McGloin, she was born January 4, 1941 in New York City.

Sister Monica entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in August 1964, made her First Profession in September 1966, and Final Profession in September 1972. Sister Monica earned her RN from Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and her BS in Nursing from Ohio State University.

Sister Monica was a nurse with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Agency in Columbus OH and in Cincinnati, OH. She was a nurse with Cincinnati Area Senior Services and a volunteer grant writer with the Community Land Co-op of Cincinnati. In New York she was a co-foundress of the Newburgh Ministry in Newburgh NY. Sister Monica served as president of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in Ossining NY from 1984 to 1992. Following her sabbatical, she provided consulting services for various organizations with a justice thrust in the Bronx. NY. Upon her return to Cincinnati, Ohio she continued her ministry working for peace and justice with a variety of organizations. From 2003 to 2009, she served on the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope.

Monica never retired from her passionate involvement with peace, justice, the rights of the poor and underserved. She also was an ardent advocate for issues relating to the environment, climate and the preservation of land and its resources. We take great comfort that Monica who so fervently preached the Universe Story is now living her new life with the Universal Christ.

Sister Monica is predeceased not only by her parents, but also by her brother John and her sister Sheila Crovatto.

She is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Hope, her loving extended family in Cincinnati and her nieces and nephews.

Her body has been donated to scientific research. A memorial mass will be celebrated in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 19, 2019. A memorial mass will also be celebrated at the Dominican Sisters Center of Hope at the Mariandale Center in Ossining, NY on December 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM.
