Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Canonization of St. Elizabeth Seton with Mass and Service Day
Delhi Township, Ohio – September 11, 2025 – The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati gathered at the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse Sept. 6-7, 2025, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s canonization with prayer, community, and service.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Community welcomed Archbishop of Cincinnati Robert Casey and invited guests for a special Mass at the Sisters of Charity Immaculate Conception Chapel. In his homily, Archbishop Casey reflected on Elizabeth Seton’s words: “God is like a looking glass in which souls see each other.” He reminded us that while we may fear the mirror for the flaws it reveals, through God’s eyes we also see our potential—to be merciful, to be peacemakers, to be pure of heart. Such a mirrored moment with God becomes an invitation to transformation—within ourselves and in our world.
The liturgy was enriched by music from the Seton High School Ensemble and the Sisters choir, as well as student artwork from Seton’s Art Department displayed in the chapel. Following Mass, guests enjoyed a community meal and explored exhibits highlighting Elizabeth Seton’s life and legacy through videos and artifacts.
The following day, Sunday, Sept. 7, the Sisters hosted a Day of Service, embodying the charism of their foundress. Volunteers from Seton High School, Mount St. Joseph University, DePaul Cristo Rey High School, and Elder High School joined the Sisters in a series of service projects.
Service Day Impact included:
· Beds Built with Love: In partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Cincinnati Chapter, volunteers built 40 beds for local families. Thanks to the Community’s financial support, another 40 beds will be built and delivered in the months ahead.
· Bedding Drive: Mount St. Joseph University students and friends donated bedding for SHP, providing comfort and dignity to children in need.
· Blankets of Care: Through SoulTIES, volunteers created 27 fleece blankets to accompany the new beds.
· Sandwiches for Our Daily Bread: More than 300 sandwiches were prepared and delivered to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and Social Center.
· Cards of Care: Handmade cards from Sisters and volunteers will soon deliver words of encouragement to children and families.
Canonized on Sept. 14, 1975, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first American-born saint. In her 46 years, she experienced joy, loss, and perseverance, founding the Sisters of Charity of St.
Joseph in 1809 and establishing the foundation for Catholic education in the United States. Today, her legacy continues through the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and other congregations across North America, who serve the needs of the poor and marginalized with faith and compassion.
