Tenebrae ("shadows") is an ancient service celebrated for Holy Week celebrated in a church lit only by candles held in a special, 15-candle holder called a hearse. As the service continues, the candles are extinguished one by one, until the church is dark and the choir and priests make a loud noise ("strepidus") meant to recall the earthquake that took place at Christ's death.

The St. John Passion Play has been performed every year since 2018, when parishioners of St. John (A Franciscan parish in Over-the-Rhine) promised to put it on every year in thanksgiving for the safety of the parish’s soldiers fighting in Europe. The parish has been gone sinee 1955 but a coalition of Catholics and Protestants from around the region mount the play every year.
