Sacred Heart Palm Sunday Italian Dinner
A tradition for more than 100 years! Sit-down dinners begin at noon; take-out sales at 10 am. A twice-a-year tradition for people from around the city (there’s a Fall Dinner as well) it features hand-made ravioli and meatballs, made from authentic Northern Italian recipes, to eat in or carry out. Volunteers spend days making vats of sauce, and hundreds of thousands of spinach and cheese ravioli squares, and meatballs by the tens of thousands. The 2018 Spring 40 Days for Life campaign ends on Palm Sunday. The Ancient Office of Tenebrae is one of the best-attended events of the year at the cathedral. It features Gregorian chants and other choral music of Holy Week sung by the Choir of Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral. Tenebrae ("shadows") is an ancient service celebrated for Holy Week celebrated in a church lit only by candles held in a special, 15-candle holder called a hearse. As the service continues, the candles are extinguished one by one, until the church is dark and the choir and priests make a loud noise ("strepidus") meant to recall the earthquake that took place at Christ's death.
