It’s the third Sunday of Lent, and I haven’t started

It’s Saturday, and I don’t know about you, but there’s a lot of chores to get done today. I haven’t figured out when I’m going to Mass. Looking at the calendar, it’s already the third Sunday of Lent, and I haven’t started. I can’t remember what I gave up. My only success is I have had fish on Friday. So what can I do?

First—take a breath. Lent is not a test you’re failing. It’s an invitation. 🙏

In the Gospels, Jesus Christ is constantly meeting people right where they are, not where they think they should be. The fact that you’re even noticing that Lent is slipping by is already a grace.

Here are a few simple things you can do starting today, even with a busy Saturday.

1. Just go to Mass

Don’t worry about the “perfect” Lenten plan. Showing up is the most important step. Even if you feel unprepared, that’s often the best place to start. God works with honesty more than perfection.

2. Start small today

Instead of worrying about what you didn’t give up, choose something simple right now:

  • Spend 5 quiet minutes with God

  • Read a short Gospel passage

  • Say: “Lord, help me walk with you the rest of Lent.”

That alone is a meaningful beginning.

3. Add one simple Lenten practice

Lent traditionally has three pillars:

  • Prayer

  • Fasting

  • Almsgiving

Pick one small thing:

  • Prayer: say a short prayer each morning

  • Fasting: skip dessert or unnecessary snacking

  • Almsgiving: check in on someone who might be lonely

Small and faithful beats ambitious and forgotten.

4. Remember: Lent isn’t about what you gave up

It’s about returning home—like the son in the parable you were reflecting on earlier. The Father is always waiting on the porch.

Even three weeks into Lent, it’s not too late. In fact, today can be the real start of your Lent.

A simple prayer you might use today

Lord, I haven’t done Lent very well so far.
But I’m here now.
Help me walk with you from this moment forward.
