A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Joseph Marion Shappelle was celebrated Nov. 9 in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the community’s Delhi Township motherhouse.  Sister Joseph Marion, 84, died Nov. 3 at Mother Margaret Hall, the community’s nursing facility. 

A Cincinnati native, Sister Joseph Marion was a Sister of Charity for 66 years, serving in education, formation and parish ministry. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the Athenaeum of Ohio; a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph; and a master’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame. 

In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Sister Joseph Marion taught at Annunciation School in Clifton; St. Brigid in Xenia; Resurrection and Holy Family in Price Hill; and Holy Angels in Sidney. She also taught at St. High School from 1969-1981. 

From 1965-69 Sister Joseph Marion served as a formation director at the motherhouse and at the Elizabeth Seton Novitiate in Pueblo, Colo. 

After three years of retreat work at the motherhouse, she moved into parish ministry at the former St. Bonaventure Parish in North Fairmount in 1984. After the parish was dissolved in 2003, Sister Joseph Marion continued to visit parishioners as the moved to other neighborhoods. 

She is survived by her brothers, Father James Shappelle, C. Joseph and Charles. Interment was in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
