A Mass of Christian Burial for Army Cpl. Nicholas Olivas was celebrated June 11 at Scared Heart Parish in Fairfield. Olivas, 20, died while serving in Afghanistan when hisunit was struck by a roadside bomb.

A graduate of Fairfield High School, Olivas was deployed to Afghanistan in February. He was awarded e Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Olivas was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Olivas is survived by his wife, Faith, son, Connor, parents, Marian and Adolfo, and sisters, Maria, Alexa and Phillipa. Interment was in St. Mary Cemetary in Hamilton.
